DarkHorizons started out as my personal website early in 2001 and also served as a resource for others looking for some dark sky locations in and around the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California.  Late in 2001 I noticed a few fellow amateur astronomers were looking to put their work on the internet for others to enjoy but they were not happy with some of the "free" website services available to them.  So I proposed to set people up on DarkHorizons so that they can show others their work without annoying pop up ads and cryptic urls.
